Take Off Your Sandals

            God spoke to Moses from a bush that burned but was not consumed.

            “Moses! Moses!”

            And Moses said, “Here I am.”

            “Take off your sandals for the place you are standing is holy ground.”

           

              How many of us would gladly take off our sandals if only God would speak to us audibly from a miraculous bush?

           

               In the Bible it seems God speaks to his people loud and clear. They almost always knew it was God talking to them, and they could understand what He was asking them to do.

He told Moses to go to the king of Egypt and tell him to let the Hebrew slaves go free.   

He told Noah to build a giant boat to prepare for the coming flood.  

God told Gideon to gather an army to fight for Israel.  

He told Mary she would become pregnant with the Savior of the world.  

He told Peter to step out of the boat and walk on the water.

            Clear. Distinct. Directions from God. Nobody asked, “Hmm, is that my own thought or is that from God?” Most of them, with the exception of Gideon, did not ask for clarification, or for confirmation that what they heard was from God. Several people even argued with God. Moses told God he was the wrong person for the job. Gideon did not believe he was the Mighty Warrior God thought he was.

            After He spoke to Moses, God did not speak to anyone from a burning bush again. He is a creative God and can use any method He wants to communicate to His people. Maybe you are like my friend who wished God would leave a post-it note on her door. I haven’t heard of Him speaking through a burning bush recently, have you?

            It would be great if He did speak today through burning bushes, in an audible voice, and we knew for certain it was God speaking and there was not any doubt what He meant.

            If He doesn’t speak through a bush anymore, how does He speak to us? We know He speaks to us through the Bible; after all it is called the Word of God. But are there other ways He speaks?

            Over the next 31 days, I want to explore the ways God spoke to His people in the Bible, and the variety of ways He speaks to Believers today.
