Take Off Your Sandals

God spoke to Moses from a bush that burned but was not consumed.
            “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”
“Take off your sandals for the place you are standing is holy ground.”

How many of us would gladly take off our sandals if only God would speak to us audibly from a miraculous bush?

In the Bible it seems God speaks to his people loud and clear. They almost always knew it was God talking to them, and they could understand what He was asking them to do.

He told Moses to go to the king of Egypt and tell him to let the Hebrew slaves go free.
He told Noah to build a giant boat to prepare for the coming flood.
God told Gideon to gather an army to fight for Israel.
He told Mary she would become pregnant with the Savior of the world.
He told Peter to step out of the boat and walk on the water.
Clear. Distinct. Directions from God. Nobody asked, “Hmm, is that my own thought or is that from God?” Most of them, with the exception of Gideon, did not ask for clarification, or for confirmation that what they heard was from God. Several people even argued with God. Moses told God he was the wrong person for the job. Gideon did not believe he was the Mighty Warrior God thought he was.
After He spoke to Moses, God did not speak to anyone from a burning bush again. He is a creative God and can use any method He wants to communicate to His people. Maybe you are like my friend who wished God would leave a post-it note on her door. I haven’t heard of Him speaking through a burning bush recently, have you?
It would be great if He did speak today through burning bushes, in an audible voice, and we knew for certain it was God speaking and there was not any doubt what He meant.
If He doesn’t speak through a bush anymore, how does He speak to us? We know He speaks to us through the Bible; after all it is called the Word of God. But are there other ways He speaks?
Over the next 31 days, I want to explore the ways God spoke to His people in the Bible, and the variety of ways He speaks to Believers today.
I hope you enjoy 31 Days of Hearing God!
"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by his Son." Hebrews 1:1

  1. Oh, this is interesting. I've also thought a hand written note from God would be very convenient. =) Look forward to reading the rest!

    1. Me too Sarah! I guess technically He has written us a note with the Bible, but I know what you mean. 😃

  3. Looking forward to this series Robyn, especially in this season of our lives! Before we adopted CJ, Clarke used to say he needed skywriting! Instead, he was deployed to Africa. Close enough, huh?! ;)

    1. Skywriting would be great! LOL! But it sounds like God spoke to him loud and clear in Africa. Thanks Michele!

  4. I never really though about it, but it's so true. God doesn't tend to do things the same on repeat. He is creative in how he speaks to us in the same way that he made each of us unique individuals. I love this!

    1. Thanks Natalie! Maybe that is why He uses so many ways to speak to people, because we are all unique.

  5. I love this... and I love that He is always speaking... we just need to learn to lean in and listen! Great idea for a series!

    1. Thanks Karrilee! I agree the hard part is us learning to listen, or taking the time to listen. He is always speaking.

  6. Robyn, I always say, "I wish God would send me a postcard." I said it once to a friend years ago when I was conflicted about taking a great job that had been offered to me out of the blue - I said *I wish God would send me a postcard* Kitty looked at me and said, I think He just did!!!! God speaks to us NOW - we must be still enough and trust Him enough to willingly listen. Your series sounds great!

  7. I find that the more I am in the word and really pursuing God, the clearer his voice becomes. I really think I would have a heart attack if he audibly spoke to me lol.

    1. I agree with being in the Word Melissa. I keep having to remind myself that what He has to say to me is more important than what I have to say to Him.

  8. I've heard God's voice distinctly one time in my life--in the middle of the night when he work me up and told me to pray for British Envoy Terry Waite (it was during the time he was being held captive back in the 80s). Other times, it's more like an impression of what I should do--an urgent feeling that won't go away. I look forward to your series!

    1. Yes, I agree -- an urgent feeling that won't go away is a good description.
