Hearing God on a Tractor

My friend’s Dad shared this story with me:

After being saved at revival meetings in our little country church in Central Nebraska, back in 1960, I knew that I had been forgiven of my sins.  I was thrilled with my new found relationship with the Lord Jesus.  The Word opened up to me and I was really wondering what had happened to my wife and I.  Then shortly after our encounter with the Lord, I was reading the Word and ran across                2 Corinthians 5:17:

"If any man be in Christ he is new creation, old things are passed away and all things are become new."

I knew then that was what had happened to me.

My wife and I started memorizing verses.  I had my memory card stuck in the little power steering plate on the tractor steering wheel while plowing one morning.

Matthew 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you"

was the verse I was working on, when the Lord spoke to me. He impressed on my heart to go and tell Bill, my wife's brother, what had happened to us.  I began to argue with the Lord, saying we didn't know enough to tell anybody yet, but the Lord just kept impressing my heart.
When I went in for dinner I told Edna, my wife, that we had to go over to her brother Bill's and give him the gospel.  Bill was well known in our farming community as a wild man and his marriage was not doing well either. We began to pray that the Lord would help us, and help us He did!
We got invited over for supper one evening.  We went in fear and trembling wondering how the Lord was going to work this out.  We had not been Christians very long and weren’t sure what we were going to say. As we sat around the table that evening, Bill asked me to pray and thank God for the food.

Then he said, "What has happened to you two anyway?"

The Lord was so faithful.

After supper we began to show Bill and his wife Joyce from the Word what had happened to us.  God began to guide us in bringing scriptures to mind.  We fumbled in our bibles looking for verses that would answer Bill's questions but the Lord guided us in every way.  We were able to give the "gospel which is the power of God unto salvation" to them.
As we were walking out to the car, at two in the morning, getting our three kids situated in the car, Bill said,

"I want to become a Christian, but first I have to get my life cleaned up."

I replied, "Forget it!"

"What do you mean, forget it?" he said.

"If you are going to clean up your life then forget it!" I told him.

Then the verse I had just memorized, Matthew 6:33 popped right into my head and I said "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you."

With that we left for home, and the next time we saw Bill, he was a born again Christian. He became an outspoken, unashamed follower of Jesus and won many souls before the Lord took him home at age 60.
God is faithful and is not willing that any should perish, and the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation. - Jim

    1. I'm so glad you liked it Dianne. The man who wrote it and his wife left their farm and became lifelong missionaries a few years after this story. Very inspiring how God has used them.
